OUR REGENERATIVE PRACTICES

Nurturing the Land, Animals, and You through Holistic Farm Management

At Coen Farm, we believe in working with nature to produce nutrient-dense food while regenerating our ecosystem. Our practices focus on soil health, animal welfare, and biodiversity, resulting in products that are good for you and the planet. Since 1988, we've been committed to chemical-free, holistic farming methods that heal the land and nourish our community.

BUILDING LIVING SOIL

Healthy soil is the foundation of our farm. We use no-till methods, cover crops, and rotational grazing to enhance soil fertility, increase water retention, and promote biodiversity. Our visual soil health assessment process ensures we're constantly improving our soil's vitality.

Our assessment, refined over six years of study with experts like Dr. Elaine Ingham and Nicole Masters, uses a simple 15-point process that evaluates air, water, food, and shelter in the soil. By focusing on these key elements, we create a balanced environment that supports robust plant growth and a thriving ecosystem.

GRASS-FED & FINISHED GALLOWAY BEEF

Our Galloway cattle graze on diverse pastures, moving frequently to mimic natural herd behavior. This practice improves soil health, increases plant diversity, and results in beef that's rich in nutrients and flavor. Our beef has been lab-tested to have an exceptional omega 3:6 ratio of 2.5:1, far superior to conventional beef.

Galloway beef stands out for its superior flavor, juiciness, and tenderness, as proven in USDA tests. We combine these exceptional genetics with our holistic management practices to ensure the highest quality beef.

MILK-FED, PASTURE-RAISED BERKSHIRE PORK

Our Berkshire pigs are raised on pasture and fed a unique diet of milk from our grass-fed cows, fermented grains, and forage. This approach results in pork with exceptional flavor and nutrition, containing 5 times more omega-3s than conventional pork.

We supplement our pigs' diet with milk from our Jersey cows, fermenting grains to improve digestibility and nutrient absorption. This "piggy porridge" is rich in vitamins and minerals, resulting in pork that's both delicious and exceptionally nutritious.

TRULY FREE-RANGE EGGS

Our hens roam freely on pasture, protected by mobile chicken coops. They forage for insects and plants, supplemented with organic, soy-free feed. This diverse diet results in eggs with vibrant yolks and superior nutrition.

From April to October, our hens enjoy a diverse diet of insects, worms, seeds, berries, and pasture in our forest gardens. During winter, they are moved to an insulated building with fresh bedding and baled forage. With so much time in the sun and such a diverse diet, our customers often remark that our egg yolks "glow in the dark" a testament to their health and vibrancy.

PERMACULTURE-INSPIRED FOREST GARDEN

Our 6-acre forest garden mimics a natural ecosystem, featuring over 50 species of perennial fruits, berries, and nuts. This diverse landscape sequesters carbon, provides habitat for wildlife, and produces nutrient-dense berries and herbs for our teas.

Planted in 2014, our forest garden is a testament to permaculture principles. By mimicking the structure and function of a natural forest, we create a thriving ecosystem that produces high-quality berries and herbs, all while benefiting the environment.

PRIORITIZING ANIMAL WELL-BEING

At Coen Farm, the well-being of our animals is central to our regenerative practices. From the moment they arrive on our farm, we're committed to providing an environment that nurtures their physical and emotional health, allowing them to express their natural behaviors and live a fulfilling life.

This is achieved through a combination of factors, including low-stress handling, rotational grazing, diverse diets, and comfortable living conditions. We believe that healthy, happy animals not only produce higher-quality food, but also contribute to the overall health and vitality of our farm ecosystem.

SUPPORTING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

Our regenerative practices are constantly evolving as we learn more about our ecosystem. By choosing Coen Farm products, you're not just nourishing yourself—you're supporting a system that regenerates the land, promotes biodiversity, and sets new standards for ethical farming.
